West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will on Monday oversee relief operations at the India-Nepal border in the aftermath of the killer earthquake in the neighbouring Himalayan nation.

According to the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress, the party supremo will be present at the “Pani Tanki Check Post between India and Nepal to oversee the passage of truckloads of relief materials from India to Nepal”.

Nepal was hit by a massive earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale on April 25, killing over 6,300 people, injuring more than 14,000 and rendering countless homeless. Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has expressed apprehension the death toll could to go up to 10,000.

Banerjee had visited Siliguri in north Bengal a day after the quake to take stock of the damages in the region.

“She visited the affected people in Siliguri and Mirik and had said that a rescue team was also being rushed to Nepal. She had also chaired a meeting with the district magistrates of the six north Bengal districts to assess the situation and send relief materials,” the party had said in a tweet from the Trinamool’s official Twitter handle.

“Mamata will be in Siliguri on May 4 and come back to Kolkata on May 5,” it had tweeted.
